In New York only asbestos handling contractors and crane operators are licensed at the state level. Every other type of construction-related general contractor license NY, including general contractor (or home improvement contractor), is issued by the city or county in which the contractor will be working.

BUSINESS OF INSTALLING, SERVICING, OR MAINTAINING
SECURITY FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS
MASTER ELECTRICIAN WAIVER
Master Electricians who are licensed by a municipality prior to July 15, 1993* and who engage in the business of installing, servicing or maintaining security or fire alarm systems may qualify for either of two waivers:
1) Registration: Master electricians licensed by and providing services only within their local jurisdiction(s) may apply for a registration. All state licensing qualifications are waived for this registration. Registrations are valid for two-year periods.
If you apply based on this method, you must submit:
- A completed application
- A nonrefundable fee of $50 payable to the Department of State
- List the jurisdiction(s) where you are licensed as a master electrician (please refer to and complete Attachment C)
2) State License: Master electricians who wish to practice outside their licensing jurisdiction(s) must obtain a New York State Business of Installing, Servicing, or Maintaining Security or Fire Alarm Systems license. Applicants are waived from the education, experience and examination requirements.
If you apply based on this method, you must submit:
- A completed application
- A nonrefundable fee of $200 payable to the Department of State
- Proof of fingerprint completion
- List the jurisdiction(s) where you are licensed as a master electrician (please refer to and complete Attachment C)

*Any license issued by a municipality establishing a master electrician license after July 15, 1993 will not be grounds for a waiver unless the division determines that the standards for such master electrician license either meet or exceed those of Article 6D of the General Business Law.
